Flakies are Fun

I rarely go into Sephora stores, since they haven't had the sense to locate any of them along my usual shopping routes. I guess they don't have to, since periodically I'll make big online orders because they send me codes and offers and such to entice me. My latest box from them contained The Donmar, a flakie polish from Nails Inc. that's sold in a set with Chelsea, a purple-leaning black creme. Because I don't like to be told what to do, I tried The Donmar over a base of Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure in Pat on the Black, a black-leaning plum creme. Two coats of the creme followed by two coats of the flakie got me this:

I was curious to see how The Donmar compared to some other flakies, so I pulled out my newest one, Essie Shine of the Times, and my oldest, Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure Hidden Treasure.

I used one coat of the Essie and Sally Hansen flakies because that seemed to give me a similar flakie density to two coats of The Donmar. On the nail, they all show an orange/green color shift but aren't identical. It depends on the light, of course, but in general I'd say The Donmar tends to green more often than the other two, which tend to favor their orange/rust faces.

Top to bottom (all over SH Pat on the Black): Shine of the Times, The Donmar, Hidden Treasure.

I held my nails at all sorts of angles to see what I could see (all in same order as above).

Then I put China Glaze Matte Magic over everything to see how that would look. Interesting, I decided.

Are you yeah or nay on flakies in general? Did you hunt for Hidden Treasure when it was released?

  3. Mmm... matte flakies! I did hunt for HT forever-- and then an awesome person on MUA sent me one! About a week after that I found a display in Zellers with two HTs in it, scooped one and passed along the goodness to my best friend. Flakies for all!

  4. YAY for Flakies!! I wasn't into nail polish when Hidden Treasure came out so I missed it, but I did get my hands on some Shine of the Times!

  5. Sadly, I don't have any flaky polishes like this! They're gorgeous though. If I was into nail polish when Hidden Treasure came out, I would have grabbed myself a bottle. At least Shine of the Times is more easily available.

  6. I love ze flakies! I missed out on HT but snatched up the Essie real quick and might get a back up. I have been eyeing the Nails Inc Duos but I never go to Sephora. I like that it leans green more though so I might have get a hold of it.

  7. I really love it matte! I posted about this today, too :D But I just did what they told me to - Donmar over the Chelsea Plum. I think it does lean too green to be paired with a plum polish, though! I am going to try it over something green or blue next.

  8. I think I like The Donmar the best since it's more green. Seeing all the green and orange in matte made me think of fall leaves, somehow..

  13. I adore flakies! These all look pretty similar. I caught on to the nail polish obsession after HT was released, so I didn't get it, but I did just get the recently released Essie flakie. Can't wait to open it and check it out!

  19. I actually am kind of fond of flakies. I have that Essie but what I really like is e Cult unicorn puke. Who knew right? This also looks like that Nubar 2010 which I don't have. You rebel you! You'll show that mean nasty nail polish who's boss!

  23. I think a girl can never have too many flakies (and glitters XD) so I definitely vote yay! I am loving all three but alas I have none of these (but to be fair I am expecting the Essie one in the mail soon).
