Sinful Colors Sinfully Magnetic

Today marks the first time I've shared any swatches of Sinful Colors polish since the blogger photo stealing incident came to light. Since then, we've seen a public apology from Revlon (the corporate parent) and changes to the offending display (not all stores have followed through, but I can't blame the brand for that). As I've mentioned before, both in an update to the original entry and when I've included Sinful in recent display posts, I decided that was enough progress for me to let Sinful Colors back on my blog. Other people, including G. at Nouveau Cheap, have come to a different conclusion, and I respect that. I am still keeping an eye on the situation to see if Sinful will ever make a public statement about this themselves; I hope they do, but I expect they may have to keep quiet if legal negotiations are ongoing with the two bloggers directly involved.

And now on to the polish, in this case, the two colors I chose from the Sinfully Magnetic display on the basis of their looking the most sparkly. So many magnetics seem to fall on the frosty end of the shimmer spectrum, but these two looked like they might be more on the flecked end.



The magnets are in the rings that slip over the handle of the bottle. When you get them home, you need to break the glue bond that's holding the ring on the bottle; this isn't hard but it does leave an unsightly wad of dried glue stuck to the back of the ring. The instructions are on a little card that's held to the top of the bottle with a rubberized band. There are three steps, none of which I did just like they told me to.



I tried Polar Opposites first. I used two coats (no basecoat), not letting the first dry before I painted on the second and held the magnet over it. I didn't bother with topcoat. The magnet is generously sized and has a lip on it to help keep it a consistent distance above the polish surface. It's also very strong; the directions say 15 to 20 seconds, but I got great results with about half that. I only wish it had a mark in the center on the back to make it easier to position side to side.

In the bottle, Polar Opposites looks like a grey with blue shimmer. On the nail, after magnetizing, silvery rays appears on a nearly black background shot through with blue sparkles. Depending on the light, the blue can look anywhere from nearly turquoise to nearly purple. It's quite pretty.









In direct sun, the light/dark contrast is even more dramatic and the blue sparkles nicely.





The second color I tried is Captivate Me, a plummy purple with tiny multicolored shimmer particles. I followed the same application process as for Opposites Attract, though I see now looking at these photos that I should have added topcoat, since the shimmer in this is bumpier.









In full sun, the sparkles really show off their rainbow side.





I quite like both of these and think I might have to go take a closer look at the other shades in the display. These cost more than regular Sinfuls, but at $4.99 they're cheaper than many magnetic polishes.
