Nicole by OPI Wel-Kim To My World Collection

If you're surprised that I'm reviewing this collection, well, so I am. It's no secret that I'm not a fan of either the NOPI bottle shape or the Kardashians. I am a fan of trying things, though, so when these polishes arrived from OPI public relations for me to sample, I did not send them back. Once a color is on on my nails, what bottle it came out of or which celebrity it's associated with or what groan-worthy name it has doesn't show; it's all about appearance. So let's see how these look.

Others Pale by Kim-parison is a soft white creme. It's less stark than a pure white, which I think makes it flattering on more people, including me.

Lights Kim-era Action is a pearly white shimmer with subtle flashes of gold and blue green.

Here Kim's the Sun (their apostrophe, not mine) is golden iridescent glitter in an almost clear base. It's never going to be opaque but I thought I'd show it on its own anyway. Note that some of the yellow tone is coming from my nail staining, not the polish:

Kim Konfidential is a light camel creme. I can see this being the perfect skintone neutral for some people; I am too pink-toned to be one of those individuals.

Up & Kim-ing Pink is a candy pink creme.

Nothing Kim-pares to Blue is a blue shimmer. This is the one that caught my eye when I first saw the display at Meijer.

I used three coats of each of the polishes shown above, with the exception of the white, which took four. Perhaps I could have made the white behave at three coats if I'd been more careful to apply them evenly. Of course I couldn't stop at just swatching all the polishes in the collection, I had to try some layering. First up, two coats of Here Kim's the Sun over the white, the camel, the blue, and the pink. I think it looks quite nice over all of them.

Lights Kim-era Action did not immediately say "hi, I'm a layering polish" to me when I tried it, but I just had to see how it might look when used that way. I tried one coat of it over the aforementioned white, camel, blue, and pink. It worked out well and made the colors very glowy.

My final experiment was a French mani using Others Pale by Kim-parison for the tips, then one coat of Lights Kim-era Action, followed by one coat of Here Kim's the Sun on my ring finger as an accent. I was really pleased with how this turned out; I could see myself wearing it on one of those occasions when I feel my nails should be conservative but I still want something interesting to look at during long meetings.

Judging solely on the merits of how they look on my nails, I'd buy the blue for sure and probably the glitter and pearl. And maybe the white, if after pondering I decided it was better than similar colors already in my stash. I've long since lifted my self-imposed ban on the wonkily-shaped Nicole bottles in my Helmers, so that's not an obstacle, but the Kardashian connection still gives me pause. I was slightly embarassed to be seen buying polishes from the Justin Bieber collection, since I'm old enough to be his mom, but a portion of those sales went to charity so that made me feel better. When I buy Kardashians (which I have, because my love of pretty polish makes me do stuff), I feel slightly ashamed. None of the money goes to charity; it goes to a family that is famous for a reality show and a marriage that didn't even last three months. I hope the next celebrity tie-in Nicole by OPI does is with someone I have more respect for. I'd be all over a Star Trek collection, for instance; I understand why those Cardassians are famous (well, famous in some circles, anyway). And now I'd better wrap this up because I'm getting cranky. That's not the fault of the polishes, though; they're pretty.

The polishes shown in this entry were provided free for review purposes. The content of the entry was not dictated by the provider.

  3. They all look lovely but there's no way on this earth I'd buy something celebrity-themed.

  4. I really enjoyed reading this post, here the Kardashians are not that famous and Nicole by OPI never reached our stores so I just watched the polishes, anyway I agree with you on linking a collection to someone, it would be better if the celebrity was more meaningful than a mere socialite or whatever similar :)
BTW Nothing Kim-pares to Blue is my favourite!

  12. I don't like this collection...partially because it's associated with Kim, but mostly because I don't like the colors.
And it's funny because I don't hate all the Kardashians.
I can stand Khloe, because since meeting Lamar, she's much less hateful and bitter. And Kourtney has never bothered me.

But Kim...god she gets on my nerve and her mother is even worse.

Anywho, these did look awesome on you. And I love your pictures!

  13. I do like all of the polishes I have to say. It doesn't really bother me that they get the money. That's how they make a living. I'd buy these if they were more freely available in Ireland. Others pale in kim-parison is really stunning.

  19. I picked up a few of these on Monday at Shoppers Drug Mart here in Canada...I made the mistake of wearing Kim Konfidential as I was looking for a neutral...terrible colour on me...not even the sparkle of Here Kim's the Sun layered on top could save it.

I do think Nothing Kim-pares to Blue is my fave of the bunch!

  22. They are super pretty! I object to the tie-in too. Ugh, the names are just too much.

Plus, here in Canada NOPI are more expensive than OPI most of the time. How does that work?

Also, I love it when someone is not afraid to point out a wayward apostrophe. =)

  23. I know that I'm not the first who gave you this award and you probably don't have time for this kind of posts, but I gave you the Blogger Appreciation Award :).

  24. Totally feel you on the Kardashian thing, I didn't even bother looking at the polishes because of it... The blue is definitely pretty, but I don't feel like I'm really missing out by not throwing more money into their steaming pile.
