Sephora Pantone Universe Tangerine Tango Creme with Comparisons

I love color and do things like read books on color theory for fun, and of course I love nail polish, so when Sephora and Pantone teamed up to make a set of four lacquers celebrating Tangerine Tango, the color of the year for 2012 (as determined by Pantone), it was natural I'd be interested. Still, I procrastinated for months about buying the set, as I wasn't overly impressed by early swatches I'd seen, and I'm not that into wearing orange anyway. But a few weeks back there was good deal for Sephora on ebates.com (full disclosure: that's my referral link) and when I was filling my cart with stuff, I decided to add the Pantone polish set since $17 for four polishes didn't seem like so much compared to the $16 I was putting out for the Nails Inc. fishnet magnetic.

I tried the creme first, since it seemed like that would be the purest representation of the color in polish form, the foundation on which the rest of the collection would be variations. The formula of this was very thin, and at four coats, it was still more sheer than I would have liked. I wouldn't call it a jelly, just thin. If the goal was to show off the color itself, something more opaque would be preferable to letting the shade be influenced by whatever staining or discoloration the nails wearing it might have. On the plus side, it was pretty shiny on its own, so if you don't like to wear topcoat you wouldn't have to with this one, but I pretty much always weart topcoat so that's not really a selling point for me.

I was so underwhelmed by the formula of the Tangerine Tango Creme, I just had to see what alternatives I could find in my stash. I came up with Sinful Colors Citrine, Essie Meet Me at Sunset, and Revlon Top Speed Chili.

Sinful Citrine was three coats for me, and the color was actually pretty darn close to the Pantone. The Sinful is perhaps a touch brighter, but in most lights it's hard to see that difference. Left to right below: Pantone, Sinful, Pantone, Sinful.

Essie Meet Me at Sunset took three coats as well. It's a touch darker than the Pantone, but again in most lights the difference is probably not noticeable. Left to right below: Pantone, Essie, Pantone, Essie.

Revlon Top Speed Chili is darker than the Essie, enough that it does show a difference against the Pantone in most lights. Not a big difference, true, but if you're looking for a dupe, this is not it. It is, however, a three-coater. Left to right below: Pantone, Revlon, Pantone, Revlon.

Citrine is the best value alternative for Tangerine Tango, for sure. It was part of the Wow Pop display with superheroines on it that showed up in stores around here in April, but I've seen random bottles of it around recently, often mixed in with the summer neons.

At this point, I was not excited to try the other polishes in the set (a matte, a shimmer, and a glitter), so I didn't. KrisInPhilly did swatches of all of them on My Lucid Bubble; I should have re-read that before I ordered and saved myself $17. Ah well, it's not like I blew the mortgage money.

  3. They all look the same to me... ;) That is a nice orange, but I always have the problem of it being so sheer, too. :/ Makes my nails look dirty.

  4. I have this set from Sephora and really like it. The glitter is my favorite and it makes for an amazing pedi! The shimmer is pretty sheer though...I think it's more of a layering polish, but the flecks in the sun are gorgeous!

  11. Tangerine tango is lovely but what a shame that it isn't opaque enough... Thanks for the comparison!

  12. I would hope you wouldn't spend the mortgage money! And you are such a geek reading books on color theory? Really? Are you a green personality or what? I almost bought this set since I'm really feeling orange lately, but really just want two of the three and now after reading this, am very glad I didn't spend the money!

  13. I love the color but I think I would rather buy the Sinful color and save myself some money. I wanted this set but being the cheap one that I am I passed on it lol. Now I am going to be on the lookout for the Sinful polish though.

  14. I really love orange, it has been my favorite color for years so I was glad when it became popular this year. For me though, tangerine tango is a big miss colorwise. It was very disappointing to see that the shade is so tomato-y, definitely a miss on anything like tangerine.

Thanks for the post, and as always your swatches of this polish are great.

  15. I love seeing your comparisons! I don't think I own a color like these...I'm tempted to try and see what they would look like with my skin color...
