Color Club and Ruby Wing Sampler

I recently got another set of polishes to review via the Color Society Bloggers Network. There were two shades from Color Club's fall collection, Girl About Town, and two from Ruby Wing's, Cupcakes and Champagne. Left to right below: The Uptown, East Austin, Sweet Cream, and Chocolate Mousse.

East Austin is surprising color for a fall collection. It's a vibrant pastel (that's a thing, right?) coral creme. I used three coats, no topcoat, for my swatch.

I topped East Austin with the two Ruby Wing colors, using Chocolate Mousse for three of my digits and Sweet Cream for an accent nail. Chocolate Mousse has shredded iridescent mylar flakes in a clear base. The base is thick, probably to try and weigh down the flakes, which have a tendency to want to stick up. I found it a tad goopy and hard to work with, but interesting to look at. I used about two coats; it's hard to say for sure due to the dabbing I was doing to get the flakes distributed. Sweet Cream was perfectly well behaved, so I can say for sure that was two coats. It's got pink and light orange shimmer in a transluscent base.

Outside in the sun, the base color in both Chocolate Mousse and Sweet Cream darkens to a purple/berry color. I did these swatches relatively late in the day when the sunlight wasn't at its strongest; based on poking around and looking at other people's swatches of these, they would have darkened even more if it had been closer to midday. The next time I use these, I think I'll paint them on outside, as it was only after I saw them dark that I realized my cleanup left something to be desired and I hadn't managed to completely cover up the base color, either.

I thought maybe the light coral wasn't the ideal base for Sweet Cream, so I tried it over a dark blue. I really liked that combination; it brought out a lot of interesting colors in the shimmer of Sweet Cream that hadn't shown up over East Austin.

The Uptown has red/orange/gold/green shifting flakies in a grape purple jelly base.

I used The Uptown on its own at three coats but it would be great for layering as well. I did add a topcoat, though the flakies in this are nothing like the shreds in Chocolate Mousse and do lay pretty flat on their own.

There are four other colors in each of these collections. You can see and buy them on the brands' websites at these links at least for right now (not affiliate links): Color Club Girl About Town and Ruby Wing Cupcakes and Champagne. You may notice that the Ruby Wing site mentions that those polishes are scented; this is true, but I found it to be pretty subtle. I got a whiff of floral from them, nothing overpowering.

The polishes shown in this entry were provided free for review purposes. The content of the entry was not dictated by the provider, and I get to keep the polishes for my own use.

  1. I looked up the names of the other colors in that "Girl About Town" collection and they seem to be neighborhoods in various cities. East Austin is (or at least was years ago when I lived there) predominantly Hispanic, so I guess that's why the choice of color? I seem to remember that a lot of houses in East Austin were painted in bright colors.

  2. Chocolate Mousse reminds me of Luxe and Lush. Not the best flakies ever. lol And, yeah, vibrant pastel is totally a thing. I have a KleanColor like that. Except green.

  7. I love all of these but I don't know if I would get the chocolate mousse. I never use the layering polishes enough.

  8. Ok so you killed my lemming for Chocolate Mousse but now Sweet Cream is on my radar lol. I do love The Uptown. Is it me or is the cap on East Austin leaning a little to the right? I could be going crazy but that is what got my attention at first glance lol

    1. turtlechick, that cap is a bit wonky looking, you're right. I must not have screwed it back on right before I took the photo--probably a side effect of the high I get when I'm having a good swatching session. :)

  9. I really like your reviews Karen, they're honest and so helpful when I have to decide if a polish is worth the US-Italy shipping cost! Actually this time you made me add Sweet Cream to my wishlist :-P I wish you tried more of those Ruby Wing (I expected those from Cupcakes & Champagne to be heavily scented)!
