Ulta Mud Pie, Starry Night, and Boogie Nights

Until Ulta's offering made it into one of my matte topcoat comparisons a couple months back, it had been quite some time since any Ulta brand nail polish had made it onto my nails and into my blog. But recently I bought some colors from their salon line of polishes, which they had on sale for $2 a bottle. Enough time had passed since they made the bottles smaller and raised the regular price that I was ready to let go of that resentment (it helps that the even bigger issue I had with them back when I ranted about the bottle change has been resolved; now we're on the purchases equal points program where I can spend my points on anything, which suits me just fine). Today I have a trio of colors: Starry Night, Mud Pie, and Boogie Nights.

Mud Pie is a deep taupe creme, which anyone who saw my nail wheel post knows I sure as heck did not need. But ... two dollars! And now I am even better positioned to survive a worldwide shortage of taupe polish should one occur in future. This swatch is two coats, no topcoat.

Much as I love a good taupe creme, Mud Pie was just on my nails to be a base for the two glitters. Starry Night is a mix of large and extra small gold and silver holo hex glitters in a clear base. It's similar to what you'd get if you took all the gigantic curling gold hexes out of OPI's When Monkeys Fly (from the Oz the Great and Powerful collection) and shrunk down the smaller hexes in the OPI.

Boogie Nights is a mix of fine gold and multi glitter with medium hex glitter in silver and multi, also ina clear base.

Both of these glitters have more gold in them than I'm usually partial to, but there was enough else going on that I thought they might work for me, and indeed they did. I used Starry Night as an accent nail and Boogie Nights on my other digits, one coat of each over Mud Pie, plus topcoat to smooth things out. For Starry Night, I pushed the bigger glitters around with the brush to try and get them to form a sort of Milky Way-esque swoop of "stars" across my nail.

I was quite pleased with this combination of polishes and could see wearing it as a full mani.

  3. I love boogie nights! I have never tried Ulta polish because I was like you too small of a bottle and too much $.
