Mid-June Display Report

Just when there seems to be a lull in new stuff showing up at the stores I frequent and I wonder when I'll have enough to do another display post, a bunch of things appear and here I am again.

Though I've bought them in the past and liked many of the colors, now I pretty much ignore the Ulta brand mini sets because a) the salon line minis are so very very tiny they make me feel like a huge scary monster when I try to use them (the professional line bottles are bigger so they're okay) and b) if I really like a color, chances are not good that I'll be able to get a full size bottle as it seems most of the colors in the sets are only released as minis. One mini set did make me stop and take a long look: Ulta is on the magnetic bandwagon. The bottles are the wee ones, but a couple of the colors look interesting. So far I haven't bought these because I do have so many other magnetics; how long my willpower will hold out I'm not sure. Colors are: Polar Opposites (turquoise/teal), Rules of Attraction (pink), Put a Ring on It (dark silver), Polar Opposites (dark blurple).

I still haven't seen the Pure Ice Vinyl Remix sets in stores (maybe I missed them entirely?), but when I was at WalMart looking, I spotted some summery colors from Salon Perfect in a display called Blooming with Color. I didn't get the shade names on these because I was feeling weak that day and thought if I picked them up I might end up taking some home, and while some of them are quite pretty, I have very similar pretty colors in my stash already and do not need to get involved with another brand.

The Pixi display at Target had already been somewhat picked over and ill-treated by the time I got there (it also confused my camera for some reason, though it usually doesn't have a problem with green). Left to right: Metallic Mermaid, Mink Grey, Opal Sheen, Luminous Lilac, Very Violet (in Summer Pink's spot), Paradise Pink, Real Rose, Coral Cabana (in the slot for Very Violet rather than its own—I really should have rearranged this before I snapped a photo), Vivid Coral, Fresh Red. (Pirouette Pink was missing.) I was able to leave these in the store because a) mostly muggle colors and b) $8 for .25 ounces. I am curious about the three on the left, but not sure I'm curious enough to pay that much for them.

We've previously discussed the OPI Ulta Too Haute To Handle colors; here's what the display looks like.

The pink you see a hint of behind the Ulta colors is OPI Vintage Minnie Mouse. I just had to get the Minnie minis, which have the three non-glitter colors and a top coat. I usually take my minis out of their boxes and recycle the packaging, but being a Disney fan, I think I'm going to
have to keep this box.

In one of the aisles on the drugstore side of Ulta, there was a new Elegant Touch section, with a variety of fake nails and wraps and French manicure kits.

The most interesting part of this was the fake nail kits with accent nails (called the "ring finger manicure") and Skittles (called "mix it up").

Sally Beauty got a chunk of my money last week because they were the first place I saw the Orly Flash Glam FX. This display has the first five of what I understand are twenty-two new glitters Orly is releasing, plus Liquid Vinyl to layer them over. The glitters are: Mermaid Tale, Spazmatic, Can't Be Tamed, Be Brave, and Sashay My Way.

The Liquid Vinyl bottles had a special hangtag on them explaining the layering concept.

Sally and Ulta both had the China Glaze Summer Neons. There are twelve colors in this collection: Surfin' For Boys (orange red), Love's a Beach (pink), Hang-ten Toes (bright fuchsia), Beach Cruise-r (purple), Under The Boardwalk (purple), Ride The Waves (blue), Splish Splash (blue), I'm With The Lifeguard (green), Sun-Kissed (yellow), Orange You Hot?, Flirty Tankini (pink), and Pink Plumeria. All are shimmers except for Under the Boardwalk and Ride the Waves, which are jellies.

Sally had a special display of the Nina Ultra Pro neons; I believe these are all core colors but it was nice to see the brand getting a spotlight. Left to right: Orange Flame, Punki Purple, Punki Pink, Blu Blaze, Solar Flare, Lime Light.

In the drugstore arena, Sinful Colors red, white, and blue display for this year appeared with core colors Snow Me White, Midnight Blue, and Ruby Ruby, plus coordinated nail art colors.

I shared Sinful's Suit Up display last time, but came across another one that didn't have the doubling up of colors; this may be the full assortment Sinful intended to be in the display: Unicorn, Nirvana, Star Fish, Open Seas, Hazard, Boom Boom, Gogo Girl, Casablanca.

Piggy Polish is in the magnetic game now, too. I've seen two different displays of these. One has five colors: Mod Facade, Stand at the Edge, Silver Lining, Create, and If in Doubt Love. The magnets for these are on little paddles shrink wrapped to the bottles.

The other display had three of the colors: Create, Mod Facade, and Stand at the Edge.

Ulta Professional has Walk on the Wild Side. Six colors: Roaring to Go (slightly burnt orange creme), One in a Chameleion (warm green shimmer), Meerkat-cha Later (taupe creme), Joined at the Hippo (deep blue creme), Stampede of Approval (grey creme), Tou-can Play That Game (magenta creme). I like a lot of these colors, but I suspect I already own near dupes for every one.

Finally, not a display, but spotted in a store—a hardware store, of all places—the Manicure Station, for "perfect salon nails at home". I certainly support this product's goal of "No More Messy Nails!" but don't really see how it's going to help all that much; it doesn't seem to address the issue of cuticle flooding at all, for one thing.

Looking back over these photos, I realize I didn't buy most of these things. There are some I may yet pick up, but the fact I didn't scoop them up the minute I saw them is a good sign, I think.

    1. Also, China Glaze Hunger Games and Orly Dark Shadows will be on clearance this weekend, so you may as well sign your first-born child to them, as well.

  12. I'm not sure about what to say about Station Manicure... indeed it's not worth it when it comes to cuticle flooding, but will it help for the rest anyway? :P

  15. I just had to comment because I was at ULTA today and was very tempted by the magnetic set. I resisted because I didn't have a coupon with me. The colors look much more interesting to me than many other brands' colors.

Regarding the Sinful Colors, I wanted to note that there are 2 colors in the Suit Up display that are dupes of OPI POTC colors. Starfish=OPI Sparrow Me the Drama and Open Seas= Mermaid's Tears.
