Beautifully Disney Mini Polish Sets Times Three

I read a couple months ago about the Beautifully Disney makeup line being discontinued (Doctor Disney has one report), which made me sad, as I'd only seen it in person once and was looking forward to being able to fondle the polishes and buy more when Mr. Karen and I make our next trip to one of the parks later this year. Thanks to the internet and my friend Trish, I have added to my collection in between my last Disney visit and now, but there's no substitute for seeing things up close, holding the bottles this way and that and considering which colors need to come home with me. I understand one of the reasons for the line going away is people thought it was too expensive, but so are a lot of other things at Disney; I don't see why they had to pick on my nail polish.

At any rate, hearing about the demise of the line inspired me to pull out some of the mini polish sets I'd bought but never used.

Pop of Minnie has three bright cremes and a black and white glitter topper.



The bottles have fat bows on the top of the caps, a la the bow Minnie wears.



These four-color sets seem made for Skittles. Pop of Minnie shades below, top to bottom: Dots or Nothing (black and white glitter in clear), Mod Mouse (acid yellow creme), Orange You Cute (orange creme), and Poptimistic (pink creme). All are three coats and the glitter also has clear topcoat added.



Of course I tried Dots or Nothing on the cremes, too, doing two coats plus topcoat. The white glitters get ever so slightly lost on Mod Mouse, as it's the lightest of the cremes, but the contrast is good with the other two bases.



Curiouser and Curiouser has Alice in Wonderland inspired colors.



These caps have a bread and butterfly and three talking flowers on their tops.



(left to right below) Who Are You is a yellow green flecked shimmer. Non Sensical is also a flecked shimmer; this is pink with a soft orange shift at some angles. Tis Brillig was a surprise; I though it was another shimmer but this French vanilla shade has a very fine grained texture to it, too. This Way That Way is a beautiful light blue creme. These were all two coats, except for Non Sensical, where I used three (my notes do not say if I needed three or if I just got distracted by the pretty).





The Tangled Web collection showcased some of the Disney villians.



The caps have skulls on various symbols: a flower (for Mother Gothel), a paw print (Cruella de Vil), flames (Maleficent), and a crown (Evil Queen).



(top to bottom below) Forever Young is a slightly tarnished gold shimmer that dries matte (go Disney, yet another finish). Drive You Wild is a metallic silver shimmer that comes close to chrome finish territory. Party Crasher is a deep plum matte shimmer. Velvet Evil is a roayl glue with scattered silver microglitter. All of there were two coats, with Drive You Wild and Party Crasher very nearly one-coaters.



I thought Velvet Evil could benefit from topcoat, so I went ahead and shined up all four shades. Velvet Evil did look better, and Party Crasher took nicely to being glossy as well.



There's a lot to like in these sets. My favorites are Mod Mouse, Tis Brillig, This Way That Way, and Party Crasher. Sparkly Ever After has an overview of all the Beautifully Disney collections; I used that to figure out which ones I needed to go look for on ebay—fortunately, there are reasonable ebay sellers offering nail polish sets in the same range as they were priced at originally (I imagine the Disney outlets were awash in these after they were pulled from the regular locations), up to $11.95 for single full size bottles and up to $24.95 for mini sets. I'll try and get my most recent purchases up in a future post.

Recent NOTD: Beautifully Disney Wish Come True

My nails are currently in a sad state; I think it's all the extra dishwashing I did over the past few weeks (first I was without my regular dishwasher at home when Mr. Karen headed west before me, then at the condo I usually do the dishes so he can work on various improvement projects like building out storage units). I really need to get in the habit of wearing rubber gloves every time. But before all that mess, my nails looked fine, and I decorated them with one of the Beautifully Disney polishes I got when I was at Walt Disney World in early December: a blue shimmer called Wish Come True (which I believe is inspired by the Blue Fairy from Pinocchio).



It wasn't until I got this one on my nails that I realized it's not just a shimmer, it's a holographic shimmer, and a strong enough one that I could see some hints of rainbows even in the indirect illumination of my lightbox.



For this mani, I started with Salon Sciences Starting Over After Artificials, then did a coat of their Instant Artificials, followed by two coats of color and Diamond Dry Top Coat. After I did my usual set of photos in the lightbox, I spent quite a while just admiring it and taking photos in different lighting conditions around my house.









I'd intended to take this off before my ski trip and put on some strips, which I knew would hold up to my vacationing ways, but it was just too pretty to remove that soon, so I didn't. Good thing, too, as it looked fabulous on on the airplane, between the sunshine coming in the window and the overhead reading light.



I did get some small chips after four or five days, but they touched up fine. I got some major chipping a few days after that, but decided what the heck, I'd just pretend they were small ones and touch those up, too, as I was still enjoying the rainbows (they looked good under the reading light by our bed at the condo, but I did not bring my camera to bed to capture that). By the time I got home, my mani was looking rather rugged, so I did finally give up and take it off. Now I'm wondering if there were other holos hiding in the polish displays at Disney; too bad I won't be back there for a long time. (Not that I don't have plenty of other pretties, I know.)

Beautifully Disney Displays

I mentioned last week that I'd gone to Walt Disney World and shared the Mickey mani I wore while I was there, but I didn't have a chance to tell you about the nail polish displays I saw at the World. I knew Disney had a beauty line; The PolishAholic had swatched some minis this past spring, yet somehow I was still surprised when browsing in a gift shop in Animal Kingdom, I came across a whole big display with nail polish in it. There were mini sets, yes, but there were also full size bottles ($11.95 each, though there was a 3/$30 special going on). I didn't want to subject Mr. Karen to my full display mode antics (rearranging bottles, taking multiple shots hoping one will have good light and focus, etc.), but I had to take some photos, of course. Here are the individual full sized bottles lined up in their slots:



Shades, starting at left: Wish Come True, Something Sassy, Spriteful, Something Sassy (again; I think this slot was supposed to be for Star Struck, which will make sense later), Spriteful (again), Ocean Mist, Looking for My Prince, Mistress of Evil, Let Your Hair Down, Just One Bite, Provincial Mademoiselle, Off to the Ball, Enchanted Kiss, Midnight Hour, Diva of the Deep, Celtic Fire, Broken Arrow, You Wish, Celtic Fire (again), Far East Embers.

The tops of the bottles have different symbols on them that tie into the movie that inspired them; for instance, on the far right, there's the seashell on Diva of the Deep, inspired by Ursula from The Little Mermaid.



These polishes (and other makeup) have been released in several collections, and the big World of Disney store had displays and/or mini sets showcasing the different groupings. The latest release appears to the Fantasy in Flight, which has four polishes: Something Sassy, Wish Come True, Star Sruck, and Spriteful.





The initial collection, the one I saw on The PolishAholic last spring, had eight polishes: Off to the Ball, Enchanted Kiss, Looking for My Prince, Just One Bite, Mistress of Evil, Diva of the Deep, Midnight Hour (hmm, didn't see that in the bottles at Animal Kingdom), and Ocean Mist. Those were split into two mini sets.







Unlock the Spell had three full size colors: Provincial Mademoiselle, Let Your Hair Down, and Beautiful Bayou (again, none of that at Animal Kingdom). The mini set had a fourth color: Get Tangled Up.





I only saw a mini set for the remaining collection, Fiery Spirit. This has four colors: Celtic Fire, Far East Embers, Broken Arrow and You Wish.



As far as I know, the only places to get these polishes is at the Disney Parks and via the Disney Store website (though they don't seem to carry most of the line). Looking at these photos, I'm wishing I'd gotten more than the three bottles I did.

More than once I found myself looking at other things in the parks and wishing they were available in nail polish form, like this duochrome floor in a gift shop in Tomorrowland.



I didn't get a photo, but there were scattered holographic floors in Innoventions at Epcot—I wanted those, too.

Merry Christmas to those of you celebrating this week! I moved into my new office in my company's new headquarters building today, and even though I'm off the next two days and won't be around to enjoy it, one of the first things I unpacked was my tiny purple and silver Christmas tree. Gotta have sparklies, you know!
