Wheel T14: Glitters from Deborah Lippmann

I used to buy a lot of Deborah Lippmann polishes back in the day. I liked (still do) the square bottles; I liked the variety of finishes the brand did, especially the glitters, like on this wheel. I could also impulse purchase them at the Ulta locations that stocked them for a while. Today's Nail Wheel Wednesday is twenty of those glitters. I have more; see wheels A1, J3, and V7 (looking at those old posts, I see Blogger is doing something odd with some of those photos, so I guess I'll have to track that down ... so much for backward compatibility on the updates they've made to the software over the years).

(all have clear topcoat in addition to glitter coats noted below) 1. Deborah Lippmann Mermaid's Eyes (2 coats)
2. Deborah Lippmann Mermaid's Dream (2)
3. Deborah Lippmann Million Dollar Mermaid (2)
4. Deborah Lippmann Mermaid's Kiss (2)
5. Deborah Lippmann Do the Mermaid (2)
6. Deborah Lippmann I'm Not Edible (2)
7. Deborah Lippmann Champagne Supernova (2)
8. Deborah Lippmann Glitter and Be Gay (3)
9. Deborah Lippmann Shake Your Money Maker (3)
10. Deborah Lippmann Cleopatra in New York (2)
11. Deborah Lippmann Funky Chunky (3) [maybe two coats would have been better; the label being printed in white instead of black would definitely have been better]
12. Deborah Lippmann Ruby Red Slippers (3)
13. Deborah Lippmann Peppermint Winter (2) [nearly a one coater]
14. Deborah Lippmann 99 Luftballoons (3)
15. Deborah Lippmann Cosmic Love (3)
16. Deborah Lippmann Let's Go Crazy (2)
17. Deborah Lippmann Ray of Light (2) [okay, so this is really a flakie and not a glitter; oops]

Purple Thermals Comparison

Before I left for vacation, my nails were long enough and the weather was moderate enough to show off thermals, so I pulled out two that had been languishing in my swatching boxes for months: Girly Bits Basic Witch (from Polish Pickup for September 2020) and KBShimmer In the Mood (from PPU for November 2020).

Girly Bits Basic Witch KBShimmer In the Mood purple thermal nail polish
Girly Bits Basic Witch is a deep purple with blue shimmer and pink/orange/green flakes that shifts to lavender (cool light purple) when warm.

Apparently my index and middle fingers run warmer; you can see above the cool color is fading faster on them than the ring and pinky. I ran my hand under cool water again and ran back to my lightbox to get the picture below while more of the cool color was still in evidence.

Another look at this beauty. I don't care which state it eventually settles in once the thermal dies as I like both the cool and warm states.

KBShimmer In the Mood is also a deep purple; it has pink/purple shimmer and pink/blue/green flakes. When warm it shifts to lilac (warm light purple).

The contrast between warm and cold was very dramatic with this one, and seemed to last longer in that I was able to get a photo before the tips started to warm up (though perhaps my hands were cooler by then having been under the water a couple times with the Girly Bits).

I realized a couple days later than I hadn't done a nail to nail comparison of these two, so did that quickly on my somewhat shorter travel-ready nails before I left on my trip. Top to bottom: Girly Bits (heat already taken over the cool zone), KBShimmer, Girly Bits, KBShimmer.

These definitely are in "similar but not the same" category. The Girly Bits is a cooler-toned purple while the KBShimmer is warmer, and while they both have shimmer and flakies, they're not the same color shimmer and flakies. So I'm good with having them both. And good with whatever state they get stuck in when that happens, as it does with all thermals eventually.

Wheel S14: Dusty Peachy Shimmers

Just a few days after I got back from my big road trip around Idaho, I left for a long weekend in Portland, further disrupting my blogging. I'm back now, with no overnight travel plans until August, so we'll see if I can get back in a groove, starting with re-starting Nail Wheel Wednesday with a group of dusty peachy shimmers, many of them quite pale, a few that venture into "ballet pink" territory. I wore a lot of these kinds of polish in the mid- to late 80s, when I was newly out of college and busy making my way in the professional world. I thought bright colors would make me seem less serious. Oh, how much my ideas have changed since then. Not so much that I don't still buy these sorts of polishes; they're just a small part of my repertoire now instead of the whole show.

Vacation NOTD

I'm back from nearly two weeks road tripping around Idaho with my mister. Because apparently I no longer know how to get ready for a trip, I had just a treatment base coat on my nails when we left. I had grabbed a set of imPress nails and brought it with me, figuring I'd put them on in the car while Mr. was taking care of a last minute errand he had to do before we could leave town. This set of short squovals is called Bells & Whistles and has matte navy nails with gold nails for accents.

I didn't look closely enough when I chose this set, and it turned out that I'd already used it at some point (the missing nail should have been a clue), so when the time came to apply them, I didn't have all the sizes that were the best match for my nails. Did the best I could, which meant some fingers had oversized nails. Probably I was the only one that noticed. I hope.

They held up pretty well, especially considering all the extra handwashing I was doing since we were in more public places than usual. One of our stops was a place that had cream pies that were about three times as tall as any I've ever seen. I couldn't finish my piece. (You may notice that lotion and sunscreen have pretty much done in the matte finish by this point.)

I'd neglected to pack the thick treatment coat I usually use to stick these back on when they pop off (gentler than glue I feel), so the size matches got ever more random as the trip went on. Near the end, I had two accent nails on my right hand.

My nails usually get healthier in the summer but so far this year that hasn't happened. Feeling like I might want to do a couple weeks of treatment only to help them along. But that may take patience I don't have for looking at plain nails. Must ponder more.
