Revlon Just Add Sparkle

Continuing yesterday's holiday glitter theme, today I've got all four polishes from the Revlon Just Add Sparkle collection. The display says "limited edition"; the bottles say just "new shade", but they don't have shade numbers on them like I'd expect if they were going into the core line (and the names don't follow the single word pattern that most of Revlon's current core colors do). That's all a long way of saying I'm not sure if these will be around for a while or not.

The first polish I want to share is called Ruby Ribbon. Other than being in the red family, it's nothing like the Ruby Ribbon that was introduced two years ago as part of the Matte Suede line. This Ruby Ribbon is a full coverage glitter; it's got a clear base densely packed with fine red glitter plus fuchsia stringy bar glitter and silver holo bar glitter. I used three coats plus topcoat for these swatches.

Brilliant Bordeaux is very similar to Ruby Ribbon as far as the mix of glitters, but has a darker color scheme. It's got a very sheer grey base wtih small black glitter, tiny fuchsia glitter, magenta stringy bar glitter, and silver holo bar glitter. It makes me think of a New Year's Eve party with guests in elegant evening wear sprinkled with confetti. Same as Ruby Ribbon, the swatches are three coats plus topcoat, but Brilliant Bordeaux seems a little less densely packed.

Midnight Sapphire is a more subdued glitter than the preceding two. It's got medium and tiny silver hex glitter scattered in a deep blue jelly base. It's very similar to Deborah Lippmann Lady Sings the Blues, though I believe the Lippmann's small glitter is squares instead of the rounded hexes in this Revlon. I used two coats plus topcoat for the swatches.

The last glitter in the quartet is Sequins, which is medium and tiny gold hex glitter in a clear base. Because I didn't expect it to be full coverage, I layered it over Revlon Top Speed Spooky Skull, the sheer white shimmer from the Halloween collection. Swatches are three coats of the white plus two of the glitter (no topcoat).

Just for fun, I also layered Sequins over Midnight Sparkle. I ended up liking the combination quite a lot—makes me think of a night sky.

When the time comes to destash some of this collection, the winner for most likely to remain in my stash is Ruby Ribbon. It's bright and happy, can be worn alone or used for layering, and the string/bar glitters don't dominate the mix. Brilliant Bordeaux is my second choice; I like the purpleness of it and the way it feels like a party, but the holo bar glitter sticks out a bit too much visually from the dark base. I look at the photos and see pieces I want to re-arrange. I'll have the least trouble giving up Midnight Sparkle, because I do have the Lippmann and a square bottle from a high end brand beats a round bottle from a mass market brand if I already own both. Sequins I'm on the fence about because I don't wear gold that often, but I do like the look of it in both combinations I tried (and can't think if I have anything just like it).

  3. I love combo you came up with, though Midnight Sparkle tempts me on its own already - blue polish is a weakness.

  4. I really like Brilliant Bordeaux. Since I don't have Deborah Lippmann Lady Sings the Blues I think I will have to pick up Midnight Sapphire. It is a beautiful color.

  7. They look really great, even if I'm not entirely crazy about the amount of bar glitter in the first two...
