Chanel Mimosa

Some of you may remember me waffling about buying Mimosa in past months. Today I have that yellow shimmer to share with you, but I didn't have to buy it. This is thanks to Polish Pauper, who tried Mimosa and decided it wasn't for her, then thoughtfully offered her bottle to me. We figured out a swap and before too long I had Mimosa in my hands, with Chanel none the wiser (I don't think Chanel reads my blog, whereas I'm sure they do track my purchase history from their website).

Given the troubles I've had with lighter-toned Chanel shimmers before, my expectations for Mimosa weren't overly high, so I wasn't surprised when it needed three coats, was slightly streaky, and kept its shimmer hidden in most lighting situations. In my lightbox, it took on a decidedly lemony cast (i.e. sharp and bright and every so slightly green-tinged).

When I took it out in the weak winter sunlight (yay, we actually had some in my part of Michigan the day I swatched this), it looked warmer and flashed its shimmer more.

You know I love my comparisons, so I went to my nail wheels to find the most similar yellows in my stash. I came up with Revlon Top Speed Electric, Revlon Street Wear Taxi, and Sally Hansen Hard as Nails Solar Creme.

Note: Solar Creme is not really a creme; here's a close up of the bottle. Maybe Sally Hansen figured the shimmer was so shy they'd just call it a creme.

I used three coats of all of these, and all showed the same lemony inside, warmer outside face as Mimosa.

Top to bottom: Mimosa, Electric, Taxi, Solar Creme.

None of the dupe candidates were an exact match for Mimosa, but any would make a fine alternative if you have them. If you don't want to spend Chanel money on a yellow shimmer, Electric is still available in stores. I wish the Street Wears were still in stores; here's a closer look at Taxi, which was the best behaved of this group of yellows.

Polish Pauper also sent some fantastic extras with Mimosa, but I'll leave those as a surprise for later entries. (Looking at my "to be swatched" queue, probably much later entries.)

  2. I got Electric for the fact that it was some what of a dupe to Mimosa. I was always passing it up but one day it was on sale at Target for $2 so I had to get it. I've worn it once and I love how bright and cheery it is. I wish the shimmer was more noticeable though. Thanks for the comparison between all of the colors!

  8. Right about now I am really happy that yellow is the worst nail polish colour for me to wear and looks so bad with my skin tone, since every time I see Mimosa I want to have it.

  9. Glad you finally got your hands on Mimosa. It's a nice color but it's not for me.

  10. I love this color, but I don't think I'll spring for Chanel (saving for the Dior polishes this spring!). I do want a pastel yellow...Zoya makes one that I've had an eye on.

  13. Mmm looks like the perfect light yellow colour. The good thing about other brands is that you can get the a lot cheaper, yet they look fairly similar to the top brand. :)

Thank you for reading and commenting! I greatly appreciate knowing I'm not just talking to myself here. :) I'm moderating most comments now due to the spate of spammers who claim to be looking for sexy times.
