Color Club and Ruby Wing Combinations

My welcome package for the Color Society Blogger Network included two Ruby Wing polishes for review as well as two Color Club shades that coordinated (well, I thought they coordinated; I'm not sure if the people putting the package together intended them to be worn with the Ruby Wing colors). The Ruby Wing polishes change colors in the sun, so I had to wait to swatch them until a day I both had time and sun. One recent weekend, things aligned. I started with the pink cremes, Ruby Wing Poppy and Color Club Flamingo.

I used Flamingo as my accent nail; it took two coats, while Poppy took three coats. Neither of these have topcoat, and you can see they're pretty shiny on their own. As it dries, the Ruby Wing's scent starts to manifest; it's a floral that reminded me of roses. I didn't wear this as a full mani, so I'm not sure how long the scent lingers.

Outside in the sun, Poppy undergoes a dramatic color change from medium rose pink to deep wine.

If anything, the hang tag undersold how big a change there is between indoors and outdoors.

The change happens fast; all the photos in the composite below were taken in the same minute. The top photo was taken as soon as I could get my camera focused after I pulled my hand out of the shade, and you can see the pink is already darker than the inside color.

The second pair of polishes consisted of Ruby Wing Sunflower, a gold glitter, and Color Club Wild Cactus, a slightly blue-leaning green creme.

Once again, I used the Color Club as an accent nail. Wild Cactus was nearly a one coater, though I used two just to make sure I had complete coverage. Sunflower was nearly a two coater, though I went ahead and did three. No topcoat here, either, not even on the glitter, which was surprisingly smooth by itself. Sunflower had a floral scent, too.

The hangtag on Sunflower showed a less dramatic color change than the one for Poppy, and as you'll see very soon, that proved true.

Outside, the base color in Sunflower darkened to a deeper gold, but I'm pretty sure the glitter itself stayed the same color (not surprising) and that limited the effect the now darker base color had on the overall look.

Here are the shade and sun versions of Sunflower side by side (though the shade one no doubt got a bit of sun on it):

Ruby Wing polishes are available on the Ruby Wing website for $10 a bottle (15 ml). Even if you're not ready to buy any, it's fun to mouse over the bottle images to see the color change from indoor to outdoor. Though both the Ruby Wing colors I swatched for this post are scented, most of the line is not. I have seen Ruby Wing in stores, too, specifically Urban Outfitters and Meijer. Color Club polishes are available from the Color Club site; they're $8 to $10 a bottle. I've seen them in Bed Bath & Beyond (the stores with a health and beauty section) and other retail locations, too.

The polishes shown in this entry were provided to me free for review purposes. The content of the entry was not dictated by the provider, and I get to keep the polishes for my own use.

    1. Micki, the scent of both the Ruby Wing ones was sort of a generic floral, slightly rose-leaning if I recall correctly. Though I admit I don't know what real sunflowers smell like. :)

  4. These are really interesting........ I wonder if they make a gradient effect on long nails?

    1. UKNailRunner, I don't think they would change differently on longer nails because they're light-activated rather than heat activated, and light hits tip and base of long nails same as short.
